Manipur is a land of festivals. Merriments and mirth-making go on round the year. A year in Manipur represents a cycle of festivities. Hardly a month passes by without a festival which, to the Manipuri, is a symbol of this social, cultural and religious aspirations. It removes the monotony of life by providing physical diversions, mental recreation and emotional outlet and helps one to lead a more relaxed and fuller life.
Rasa Lila is the epitome of Manipur classical dance reveals the sublime and the transcendental love of Lord Krishna and Radha and Gopi's devotion to the Lord. It is generally performed at night in a Mandap in front of a temple and watched with a deep sense of devotion. Ras performances are seasonal and varied and performed at the temple of Shri Shri Govindajee at Imphal on the night of Basanta Purnima, Sarada Purnima and kartik Purnima and at local temples later. As for the composition , the performance is a combination of solo, duet and group dances.
